M38A1 Gas Cap Info

Post by w30bob »

Hi Guys,

Need a little help figuring out what the two gas caps for the A1 look like. Wes, I went thru both your M38 and A1 albums and saw your bottom-side comparison, couldn't find a pic of the top side of the caps.

From the ORD the original cap (8329616) was superseded by 8333722, but I can't find a picture of either cap online. I assume the later cap is the one with the little valve that you turn to pressurize, but can't confirm. There's a pic of a cap in the front of TM-8014, pg 16, that shows a cap that says "Pressurized Open Slowly" that has no valve. I assume that's the earlier cap.....so are those the two caps in question?

Why did they switch caps? I'm guessing it had to do with fording, but either way the tank is vented, so why vent the cap?

thanks,
bob

thanks,
bob

Hi Bob,
There are a couple of good posts on tank venting.
This one discusses the difference between the civvy tank caps and the M38:

And here's one that contains fording versus
non fording venting info on the A1:
