M38 fuel pump primer handle removal

Post by strathdaigeil »

I bought a fuel pump from a former Nat'l Guard mechanic who does M38 restorations for a living in his retirement. It has the number 9810 on the mounting flange but also says 1538355 on the inside of the upper cap.

There is a little rust on the primer pivot pin and I cannot figure out the best way to remove the mechanism. it appears to be held in place by a very small pin on the cam but I don't want to use too much force to beat the pin out if there is a proper way to do it with finesse.

I cannot find diagrams or disassembly info for this model.

Hi Strath,

I believe the pump PN you have is for an M38A1 and not the M38. That's not to say it won't work........it will.......it's just not technically "correct" if you care about such things. At least that's what I've read. If you search this forum on "9810" you'll see Wes has talked about this pump in a few posts.

If it were mine I'd just soak it in some Evapo-Rust and not attempt to take the primer handle off at all. That stuff is amazing and doesn't damage rubber or plastic. If you're heart is set on taking it apart you can give the folks at "Then and Now Automotive" a call and ask them how they do it.

regards,
bob

It's one of the later pumps introduced on the M38A1. 1539810, 5594069, and 5594260 all of which had the hand pump lever as illustrated in the M38A1 ORD 9.

Not sure what pin you are referring to. The lever is retained by items C & D in this illustration:

You should already have the upper and lower bodies removed then start on the center body. You remove C & D then pull the lever out.
