Cleaning shims

Post by 4x4M38 »

Transfer case shims are mostly clean. Remnants of what
looks like Permatex keeps them from being 100% shiny.

I'm assuming this will interfere with the shims being the
same thickness all across or having high spots.

I've used mineral spirits, acetone and brake cleaner.

Help?

Hi Ron,
I got one side of one shim done with repeated applications of brake
cleaner and rubbing with green abrasive pad.

At the rate that took it will be Thanksgiving before I finish the stack.

Thought of 400-600 grit paper, but no guarantee of equal flatness
across the shim, much less thinning the thing.

Aircraft paint stripper?
One of many. Today the EPA has eliminated all the truly effective chemical strippers with the exception of MEK which they have managed to drive the cost up on significantly and made shipping this terribly hazardous material extremely expensive. Most large aircraft use plastic bead media today.

Yup, one of the last few chills I get because of all that is from acetone or brake cleaner....until it gets into a scrape!

I did try using some blue plastic gloves with acetone.
Once.

Ended up with two blue rubber bands around my wrists...
