M38A1 Hand Brake Installation

Post by Madriver1968 »

Howdy all. I need some help installing the hand brake on my M38A1. The prior owner installed the handle, but nothing else -- no drum, no lever, shoes, etc.

I've looked at the manuals and the exploded diagrams, but I'm still having trouble visualizing how the lever attaches to the transfer case. Does anyone happen to have a photo of the hand brake assembly with the drum removed but the lever in place?

Thanks everyone!

Thanks as always, Wes! That answers it perfectly! That's what I thought, but I wanted to confirm.

Howdy all,

I spent some time installing the missing items on my M38A1's parking brake, and while I finally got everything in place, I've got a couple of questions.

1. The new pads are fairly tight on the drum, no matter how I adjust the yoke. They're brand new, so I assume they'll wear a bit once I've driven with them. Is this typical?

2. When I place the stop on the pin, it seems to be too thick -- it covers up about half of the hole for the cotter pin. It's a newly manufactured stop, rather than a surplus one. My plan is to just grind the stop down a bit to allow me to get the pin through. Again, anyone have advice?

Thanks as always, gents!
