M38A1 Underhood Stencil Location

Post by w30bob »

Hi Guys,

In regards to the underhood stencil that says "Secure Hood in Raised Position...." is there any guidance on where exactly it was placed? I`ve seen it centered under the shove, centered above the shovel, and in a few other locations uncentered. Are all these positions "correct"?

Also, are the lines of text left justified or center justified? I've seen both.

Thanks,
Bob

The primary Regulations and Manuals on Equipment Markings seldom address the positioning or format of vehicle specific markings concerning use, safety and servicing. Generally the bulk of these were applied in the field and followed the rapidly changes reg's Manuals and local policy letters and supplements as close as practicable. Usually the only guidance that addressed many of these placards was the format and general location and sometimes color. A good example is the TP placards. There was no real guaranteed gospel always used perfect example of what, where, how big and how spaced they should be. I always try to use a true to life in service photo to support my choices on these general markings.

Yep, these were motorpool added, usually by private Snuffy because the Sarge told him to do it. So you get them all over the place. And in 2 weeks when a different private adds them to the other Jeeps in the motorpool you can be sure he placed them in a different spot. Heck they might not even be lined up straight by the time they got done.

Here is how the underhood stencil looks on my 1952 M38A1. I taped over it when I repainted the hood to keep it original.

Thanks for the pic Kendall. I'm guessing there wasn't even guidance on the specific stencil.........meaning left justified, center, or even the number of lines. I've seen it every which way.

regards,
bob
