M38A1 Regulator Harness Question

Post by w30bob »

Hi Guys,

Got just about everything I need to replace my wiring harnesses in my M38A1, but I need some info on the regulator harness. I don't have a good one to copy from and the ORD doesn't break out what exactly is in that harness. My jeep is a mess in this regard, so no help there. So my question is......what exactly is bundled or taped into the regulator harness besides the wires to the starter and to the instrument panel? Are the wires from the temp and pressure senders taped into the regulator harness? Is the wire from the fuel gauge to the tank in there as well? The ORD only lists 2 harnesses and gives total wire length by gauge and the number of connectors, but not info on the individual wires. But since it only lists 2 harnesses I assume all the other wiring that's not in the main chassis harness is bundled into the regulator harness.........or am I way off base?

thanks,
bob

Hi Bob,
That big cable with the four pin connectors each
end was not taped with anything else. The rest of the
wiring can be fathomed by looking at the manuals
for pictures, as well as Wes' photo pages.

See this gallery:

There are at least three wiring diagrams showing where each wire went.

You can make some logical deductions as to what goes in a bundle
by how they are shown in the diagrams. Then look at firewall and engine
bay photos and confirm by seeing how many bundles and where the wires
terminate.

I now there are a couple of photos of removed A1 harnesses
on here but I couldn't find them right off.

Take care,

Take a look at the full size version of this illustration in my photo album:
http://willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules/gall ... _small.jpg Make sure you review my M38A1 Electrical Photo Album. What I am posting here is in that album.

The regulator harness is just behind the very tip of the "F" arrow point.

It contains wires: 4, 8, 9, 10, 12, 33 & 36.

The fuel gage sender has a separate lead from the gage to the sender which is just spot taped to other harness as it makes it way across the dash, down the left side of the cowl then back and across the tank. It is listed separately in the ORD 9 page 174 showing it's length, connectors and protective loom.

Wes,
I meant the generator to regulator cable. Should have specified.
Sorry.
