M38A1 Battery Box Lid Seal ORD Error?

Hi Guys,

I looked up the weatherstrip/seal for the battery box lid, as I've blasted and painted a used lid I got and, and now want to find some weatherstrip for it. The ORD lists it as only 0.012 in thick. That's pretty darn thin to be a seal. It's also way thinner than the black rubber seal I scrapped off it, which I believe was original. Should that thickness be 0.12 in, maybe? I'm sure someone's asked this, but I couldn't find it by searching the forum.

Hi B,

Yup............I realize all the vendors sell it.......but it's just a 1/2" strip of black rubber. I'm sure I can find some at work, just wanted to know how thick it was originally. ORD says the glovebox door seal is 0.22 in thick, so it seems wrong the seal for the battery box lid is only 0.012 in thick.

And besides.........I'm a cheapskate..........so it's hard for me to pay $15 (plus shipping) for a strip of rubber that doesn't even come with the glue to attach it. Yikes!.........I'm sounding more and more like my old man every day!

Crossing that over to an NSN, as you guys usually do, indicates:

Overall Height 0.343 inches nominal
Overall Width 0.625 inches nominal
Length 56.312 inches nominal

So a bit different than what's in the ORD, but close enough to find me a suitable substitute. But I think the answer to my question is that the ORD does list the wrong thickness for this seal. What it really should be is anyone's guess.

Thanks for the legwork Bob! Now what were the specs of the glovebox and toolbox weatherstrip? I'll be doing this before too long myself and (like you) can source it cheaper locally.

Perhaps it is as simple as a typo!

was suppose to read 0.12 or 0.22. There is one place it would be spelled out in better detail. The Factory drawings.
