Transfer case jumping out of gear

Post by Bob_W »

Hi
I'm new here I own an M-38 CDN (1952) and an M38 A1 CDN3 (1970) I am restoring the M38 A1 and my brother is restoring the M-38. Both Jeeps have a similar problem the M-38 pops out of low range, while the M38A1 pops out of High range while they are in 4x4. I am hoping that someone has had this problem and can help me with a list of transfer case parts that I would most likely have to replace.
Thank you

1st make sure the popping out issue is in the transfer and that the tranny is functioning fine.

This can be confirmed on a road check that covers all the bases.

Make a run in tranny 1st gear accelerating hard and decelerating hard with the transfer in both low & high 4wd. Do this in three types of terrain, uphill, downhill and flat surface. Now do all three surfaces again with the tranny in 3rd gear and checking both Low & High transfer 4wd. Record the results.

It may also be a wise choice to repeat these battery of tests 2WD high.

Sometimes a worn tranny problem causing it to jump out of gear can also trip the transfer out of gear.
