anyone read this post over at the g...tried the linseed oil rub down on my old m100 and it works . brings the old paint right back
maybe im the only one that didn't know..

It was a common practice from the 40's on, in the military to freshen up the appearance of faded OD jeeps with a rub on of engine oil or we used to use a 1010 oil which was a light weight pickeling oil.

In Vietnam the drivers would often rub their vehicles down with diesel fuel. They looked great till they drove them down the dusty roads.

I would suspect any oil coating would attract dust and dirt!

But boy, for a little while it would look great!

It was only meant for a short time of use. It was usually done when there were big inspections or big brass moving thru the unit.

Linseed oil dries up like a shellac. Who know what it will do after that. Probably will yellow and look terrible.

I have used linseed oil for aircraft work. It is the most common way to lube and corrosion proof the inside of chrome molly tubing used on fabric covered airplanes.
