M38 Head Pipe Plug at rear of Head

I am reassembling my M38. I have noticed that there is a pipe plug at the rear of the head between two head bolts.

I am curious if it has a purpose/use. I have looked at manuals, photo albums and have not found an answer, not saying there isn't one but I haven't found it.

That is the return when heater is installed.

At least yours is square on top.

Babaloo took a cutting torch to mine.

No, didn’t cut it off, just made an unrecognizable
blob out of it.
