This is what you need...easy to mount and set-up...if you don't have a cross member close enough, clamp a piece of angle iron across the frame rails and put it where you need it.

That won't work for zeke. He is trying to measure end play of the left and right axles not the pinion shaft.if you don't have a cross member close enough, clamp a piece of angle iron across the frame rails
Aren't any crossmembers in front of the end of the axle.

You will still need the dial indicator.
I have an old original Starret 196 series set that is primary using kit. I have several more assorted mountings I have accumulated over the years as well. I will use the magnetic mount occasionally but not very often. The clamp mount keeps her still better.

There are dozens of different ways to get a dial indicator mounted in a fixed position so you can take a measurement. Just shop with an imagination.
