steering gearbox

Post by Danzilla »

I noticed that the steering gearbox on my jeep is in front of the grill on the inside of the left frame rail. is this odd? or aftermarket. I know that the steering coloum is not factory ( as far as I can tell it looks like a ford) but the gearbox looks like it may be origional.

What you describe is usually a Saginaw steering gear box. It's the easiest modern box to adapt since jeep started using them in 1972 on the CJ5's. The correct box is the older Ross which is frame mounted adjacent to the brake master cylinder.
