Tie Rods - Crown vs NOS

Post by w30bob »

Hi Guys,

Looking for some info on tie rod ends for my A1. I learned from you guys that Crown makes good quality jeep parts. Can anyone comment on the quality of their tie rod ends as compared to NOS? I guess I'm asking if anything is better about the newer Crown parts than older NOS? Has anything changed in the way they make tie rod ends over the last 50 years? They seem close in price.......so which ones should I buy? Don't want to start a "bashing" thread, just want some "insider info" if it's available.

thanks,
bob

Let's see if I can send this across without being called a Basher>

The Horses Mouth is an excellent place to start a querry like this. So have you emailed crown and asked for technical help with their product? They might even pass you along to the actual manufacturer's technical staff.

There hasn't been many changes to tie rod ends over the years. Changes that have been made would be type of medal used and much closer tolerances. However, I haven't been able to find OEM named brand replacement tie rod ends for the M38A1s. I would want to know where and who made the tie rods for the M38A1 since they are a larger thread diameter than the civilian jeeps. I would venture a guess they could be made overseas. Quality may be good, but you will not know until they are tested for durability and longevity.

If I was buying for my A1--I would hunt down NOS tie rod ends as they have held up for many years and in all likely hood, you are replacing the original tie rods.

Ron Fitzpatrick has a complete set of NOS tie rod ends with medal dust shield, spring and castle nut all wrap up in cosmoline for the M38A1 at a price that will not break the bank, I didn't see carter pins included, but I wouldn't let that hold you back. You can find them here:
