Dana 18 Transfer Case Rear Output Shaft Seal Question

Howdy all,

My M38A1 has leaked from the rear output shaft seal on the transfer case since I purchased it, and I want to replace it. I have new seals, but I'm curious as to which direction it goes into the housing. The spring-backed rubber in the seal is essentially convex the side with the spring, and concave on the other side. I've read a ton of threads, and watched a ton of videos, but I can't seem to figure it out.

Hi Bill,
Generally, I believe that seals with garter springs are supposed to be oriented so the spring is on the inside ("wet side"), towards the oil or grease the seal is supposed to be sealing. And they should be inspected carefully for correct installation -- because some garters have been known to pop off.

I couldn't find a printed reference to back up my belief, so I could be off base. I'm pretty sure Wes will straighten me out if I am.....

I agree with Ron...spring to the wet side.

Put a little dab of grease on the spring in three places to help keep it in place while installing.

Suggestion, when you replace the seals, clean the splines on both the output shafts and the Flanges, then put a thin layer of RTV on the shafts enough to seal them when you put the flanges on. That is where I have had the worst of my leaks in my DANA 18 TC. It still drips as I did mine on the jeep and did not get it clean enough, but is on the list for spring...

Just trying to cover the bases...
