38a1 pinion nut

I searched through my manuals and did a internet search but did not come up with a direct answer so here I am. I am replacing the front pinion seal and am wondering how much to torque the pinion nut. I had to use an impact to remove it so do I just snug it up good so it is tight or is it possible if I over torque I could cause problems? Also I did read where someone suggested replacing the nut with a new one so I am also wondering if this is necessary. Thanks all.

It's a 3/4"-16 nut. Standard torque charts put the torque around 180 Ft Lbs. But the axle specific rebuild guides raise that to 200-220 Ft Lbs.

Not unless it is damaged or suffers serious thread ware. If you are unsure what constitutes damage or serious thread ware this would be a good time to research the topic "Standard Hardware Fits and Tolerances" and "Common Hardware Damage". Just google them up. You will quickly find out you are a wee short in the proper gauging tools to accurately measure the fits and clearances. So that would be another research topic: "Standard Gauging Tools".
