Signal lamp?
Hi picked this up at auction but not sure of year or what it is from. My guess is it is a signalling lamp. It is hand held and powered through cigarette lighter plug, although my buses this has been adapted. Any help would be greatly appreciated[/img]

Signal Lamp
I have one of those too. Neat little light. I don't think they are worth much. I think they are for sending signals between ships. Although, I guess they would be painted grey if it was a Navy thing.
Signal Lamp
Mine has numbers stamped on it. I'll look when I get home.

Hard to tell from one photo, but it could be an Aldis Lamp, also used for air traffic control around airfields to control vehicles around runways and aircraft with no radio.

What kind of power plug is on it? I believe Navy models used for ship-to-ship signals were white light only for flashing Morse code. Shipboard power is very strange stuff.
A key feature of an Aldis Lamp is that it has a mirror in the back end that makes a defined focal distance for the light beam. For airport signals it would have a red and green lens as well as the white (plain light bulb). Some smaller portable models were adapted to vehicle power 12-or-24 volt. I've seen a small decal stuck to the dash on some jeeps in some folks photo albums that show the meaning of the various red-green-white light combinations.
If it is an Aldis Lamp I'd think it'd be pretty rare.

The ones I'm familiar with the mirror isn't part of the bulb, it's convex (concave? I get them mixed up), a slightly dished mirror mounted behind the bulb. There's probably many different designs. If it doesn't have a red and green lens it's probably not for airfields. My guess would be just plain Morse code signaling. Especially because of the aiming sight. Interesting piece.

Signal Light
Found my signal light. I looks just like yours but with alligator clips on the wires. The Markings are hard to read (see below). There’s one on eBay for $29.
