Steering box rebuild

Post by DFoley »

I need to rebuild my steering box on my '51 M38. My steering is very lose and the box is leaking fluid/grease. Is this a difficult project for someone of limited automotive skill. I feel comfortable disassembling and reassembling such a part if I have very detailed instructions on how to do so. My concern is I will need specialized tools and/or a fully rig shop (which I do not have) to successfully undertake such a task. Any thoughts? Where can I get very detailed info on rebuilding the steering box. I of course have and have reviewed the manuals, but other info I could get would also be useful.
Thanks,
Dan

I can't imagine the job getting any better detail than what is already in TM 9-1804B. The only special tool would be the bushing reamer and a press. A bench mounted arbor press would work just fine.
