Back yard is soaked after last nights rain.
So, temperature dropping quickly, I got my insulated bibs on, and went out to garage and spent about three hours cleaning. Was able to free up my two tables I have along the wall for collecting all the junk.
I took apart the D18.
Disassembled 5
I put the case in the parks washer after I scraped all the crud out that I could.
I have duty on the ship tomorrow so it will just have to soak till Sunday,

Last few days have been house and work related. My mom is here to babysit the dogs while I set sail for the final time on this ship I’ve been stationed on.
I did spend a few hours at the parts washer scrubbing the D18 housing
There is still a nook and cranny here and there with the road grime cemented in. I may need a pick and some more break clean for that.
All the pieces are on hand, I just need time to do the assembly. Will paint it after assembly is done.
Happy new year to all.

stuff on the ship broke. I blew a turbo on one of my main engines and didnt even hear it go bad. All i knew is there was oil leaking out of the exhaust trunk. Glad I found it before we had a stack fire.
anyway, today i did some front fender work.
The fenders are only on there by 3 bolts. the supports are not welded in yet. I had to make sure i was lining them up correctly.

Excellent progress April! In one of your posts while repairing your tub, you claimed to not be a welder, but I will argue that you're wrong! Your welds look great to me!
The repairs on your tub have definitely inspired me to look harder into saving my own tub. I will have just as much work into my tub that you have, and you make patch work look easy haha!
Out of curiosity, where did you buy the sheet metal you used on the passenger side for the axe relief? I saw a bar code sticker on it so I was wondering if you bought those pre-cut sheets you find at Home Depot/Lowes/Tractor Supply.
If that is where you sourced those, how easy/clean do you find that they weld? I'm worried about purchasing cheap steel and having my happy-ass homeowner Lincoln blow holes in it.
I know it's on here somewhere but as it came up in this thread, what gauge is the steel on our jeeps? 18 sticks in my head.....
Also, recommendations on a good home/multi-use welder? I've been looking at the Forney Easy Weld 140 MP. It has been about 25-30 years since I took welding classes for my commercial diving license. The only thing I've used since then is the pipe soldering skills......
Thanks.

I have a Lincoln Handy Mig and it works great for everything that I need to do with it. It's a flux core but I have the regulator to use gas with it if I ever want to. I'm honestly not good enough at welding to justify getting a tank and welding with gas, so I've never even hooked it up, but the option is there. I just googled it and Northern Tool has my exact welder online for $354. I bought mine at a tag sale for $50 because the plastic bolt was broken off that holds on the spool of wire, so I just threw in a random bolt from the bucket and it's been there ever since. Other than that plastic bolt breaking, the only problem I've ever had with it was when my father borrowed it and he must have dropped something heavy on the gun and he had to replace the core because the wire wouldn't feed.
Back in November I ordered a driver seat frame, and the other day I ordered a fuel tank and all the accoutrements from a big company supplier- you all have cautioned about them before and it’s enough I’m done. The seat frame is still backordered till May, and the fuel tank is too. Kaiser Willy’s failing.
I got transferred to the sister ship of my current one (like 1 hull number lower sister ship) and I am deploying again in a few weeks so if even it comes in May I won’t even be here. I had hoped to fit the tank and seat before that deployment. . I swear- they can’t blame this on COVID. Or the Suez canal cluster.

I ordered one part from Kaiser when I first got started. The part was advertised as M38 generator to regulator cable. An M38A1 cable showed up in the mail. I haven’t bought from then since. I’ve purchased 90% of my parts from Midwest Military.
Seams like eBay could be a good option too. Lots of Surplus M38 parts over the past few years.
