starter problem

Seems like my week for problems

The starter on my 24V m38 was not retracting the gear that turns the fly wheel. When I took it off the whole shaft fell out. I took it to have it checked out and the little nut that holds it in was stripped. I need a new one. Is there a source for starter parts on does anyone know of a repair shop that might have them.

Do you have the early flat faced or late closed nose starter? Which little nut? Look up the starter in your psrts manual and give us the model of your starter and the part number for the nut.

I think it is the early style but not sure.

I don't have a parts manual for the starter.

There is a shaft with gears on it that engages the fly wheel. It is about 4 inches long. On one end are gears and the other end has some threads about 1.5 inched from the end. It is the nut that screws on these threads that is striped. Its not a nut your normal hex head style nut. It has small "ears" on it that requires a special tool to grip. It is also an odd size, 5/8 X 24 thread count. Seems the thread count is odd.

The parts breakdown is in your ORD 9 SNL G-740 parts book. The same parts book you use for the jepp body frame and engine.

Which of the above 24 volt units do you have?

It is the late style. I do not have that manual.

The nut showing is not the one I need. The one I need is internal

I cannot overemphasize the importance of owning and using the appropriate manuals for your jeep. The errors you have now have easily cost you several hundred dollars. The common manuals needed can be purchased on a single CD for $20.

When I started this project, I was told to get TM 9-8012, 9-1804A & 9-1804B. I ordered the CD last Thrusday.

To be honest, I told you wrong. I have an early starter not a late. Seems I have this little gene in me that causes to think early and type late.

No question, this looks like my starter. However the nut is not shown. If it were shown, it would be part of the shaft assy. The shaft is threaded about 1.5 inches from the end opposite of the gear that engages the fly wheel. The small nut, however not a hex or square nut but a nut requiring a special tool to remove, would hold the assy together preventing the shaft from falling out.

If you are talking about item "AC" pinion shaft assembly it is not repairable and is serviced as an asembly only. Individual parts are not stocked nor sold.

So you'll need item "AC" ORD# 7375106, WO# 117898 or AL # MZ2244
