My starter has no bracket up front, the one that bolts on to the engine. I see there are two types, Early and Late, how can I find out which one will fit my set up?
Thanks Ahead,
Aris

Hi Aris,
Depends on which starter you have.
Your starter has a data plate with part number riveted to it?
If not, you'll have to post a photo of what you have for identification.
Photos of both early and late brackets are shown on page 91 of the M38 Reference Guide.
Both are listed with part numbers as “Support, Mounting” on pages 140-141 of the ORD9 (Sept 1955) including which starter part number they belong with.
Both are available for sale here:

Good luck!

You already found your answer!how can I find out which one will fit my set up?
This is how you would normally research a completely stock as delivered from Willys M38 using the ORD 9 SNL G-740 parts catalog. Even if you were unable to view the jeep before deciding. However since thousands of these jeeps have been modified and altered over the last 3/4 century to be sure one must look at the jeep and determine weather it has an early or late engine. Why? Because both fit equally well in your M38. So until you physically (in person) view your M38's starter and determine if the two mount bolts are 3/8" or 1/2" you cannot be certain of your answer.based on the SNL G-740 my starter is the Auto-Lite 8328132 and it shows the switch removable so I need the Late bracket.!
