Interesting data plate

Saw an M38A1 where the last digit of the serial number had been re-stamped over the original number.
Would this ever be done by the factory?
If not, why would it have been done later?

Can't think of any legit reason, but that's just my opinion.

Was it the Willys Patent Plate or the Army serial plate on the dash?
Did the plates look original or like repops?

It was the brass Army serial number plate on the dash.
Just the last digit that was re-stamped.
