M38A1 Fuel Pump removal/replacement

I'm brand new to restoring this vehicle to a Korean War MP vehicle, and I'm stumped on the first day. I need to replace/rebuild the fuel pump.
It is not the original, but the smaller one with a glass bowl and no vacuum. The rear bolt is easy to remove, but the forward one is impossible. If I get a wrench on it, there is no place to move it, if I use a socket (1/4") the body of the pump won't let the socket seat on the bolt.
I'm beginning to think the pump was installed before the motor was installed.
In short: I need help getting it off and replacing it. Technique anyone?

I assume that if you are restoring the M38A1 then you intend to put a M38A1 fuel pump in there. You'll need to buy the special long screw.

You have two choices for removing those wrong nuts.

1-Find a very thin wall socket or grind one third of your current socket's sidewall extremely thin. Then go 1/4 turn at a time keeping the thin sidewall against the pump housing.

2-Using a long thin chisel and a hammer tap on a corner of the nut in a loosening direction until you break it loose.

they also make a short wrech called a crows foot.they are flat and you use a socket extension to turn them they will fit into tight places,but you will have to make several short turns and as the pump comes loose it will move a little and then you should be able to get a 1/4 drive socket on it.
