What is the best way to get the old dried up cosmoline off new/old parts? Is it necessary to remove it at all? The particular parts I am asking about are the aluminum and rubber knuckle seals that go on the inside of the steering knuckles on the front axle. The cosmoline is too dry to simply wipe off and I'm not real sure about what would cut it and not harm the rubber seals. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Jim

My dad used it in WWII and I used it in Southeast Asia. Time does not always change everything! Now-a-days I use spray brake cleaner and plastic scrub pads after the plastic putty knife.
I doubt there are any old salt mechanics that have NEVER used gasoline to clean parts.
