Vacuum wipers

I've got a problem the Vacuum wipers on my m38a1 don't work....I've recently replaced the double action pump and im getting good pull trough the lines but the problem is in the motors...anyone know anything about them?

Disconnect BOTH vac lines from both wipers. Spray a little general purpose oil in the vent side of the motor and operate it by hand. If this doesn't help then they will need a rebuild unless the vac supply is not plumbed correctly. You should have the pump's out line connected to intake manifold tap and the pumps' in line connected to the "T" fitting between the rear end of the intake and the firewall. Then the "T" has a tube going to the distributor and a tube going to the wipers. The pump will boost the intake vacuum being used to operate the wipers.

Thanks for the info, they are plumbed right.....Now my next question how bad of a job is a rebuild for them and where can i find a kit at?

I have rebuilt several of these vacuum motors, they are very simple to work on, and usually just need a good cleaning and some lubrication. I did carefully take out the original gaskets and copied them on to modern gasket material. They are very simple and fun to work on. Good luck!!

Jeepers52,

I have several old wiper motors that need rebuild. One has a broken shaft near wher the acorn nut attaches. Can the shaft be replaced?

I had a wiper motor with a very similar issue. The shaft was broken just short of the acorn nut. Luckily like you I had some extra motors that were not so pretty on the outside, but had decent parts on the inside. I did use the shaft and the flapper from one and placed it into the other. Be sure the flapper is in decent shape; otherwise you may need to replace it. These motors are a lot of fun to work on, but can be very temperamental. Good luck and have fun with it.

I looked through my stash of wiper motors. I have 3 that I think are correct for the M38 in bad shape. I also have two NOS M151 motors. Are the internal parts for the M151 motors interchangeable with the internals from the M38 motors?

That would depend on the shaft type used in the M151 units.
