Don't you know anyone that has a lath in their garage...I'd bet they have one and maybe you could borrow it for the day...

They are not a bad tool to have in the tool box.

I think you can get them, along with an outside mike for
about 25 bucks from Grizzly.

You’ll use it when you rebuild your tranny and transfer case.

I have been looking at dial indicators on the web and there are so many types and variations I am not sure what I need. Obviously I need the dial itself but what type of mount is needed?

This is what you need...easy to mount and set-up...if you don't have a cross member close enough, clamp a piece of angle iron across the frame rails and put it where you need it.

That won't work for zeke. He is trying to measure end play of the left and right axles not the pinion shaft.

Aren't any crossmembers in front of the end of the axle.

So is the issue when purchasing a dial indicator getting the correct type of mount? I have been looking on ebay for one but I am not sure what to buy. Wes can you recommend what I should be looking for.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/ENCO-Dial-Indi ... Swf7Ja~iC6 Would something like this work? Then just find a dial indicator to go with it.

You will still need the dial indicator.

I have an old original Starret 196 series set that is primary using kit. I have several more assorted mountings I have accumulated over the years as well. I will use the magnetic mount occasionally but not very often. The clamp mount keeps her still better.

Here's a new in the box set for $124

There are dozens of different ways to get a dial indicator mounted in a fixed position so you can take a measurement. Just shop with an imagination.
