The material is difficult to wade thru.

I was initially confused by Keith's remarks above:
Wes, I sent you the Paint Bill of materials 1881 for the NAVY M38 to be painted Strata Blue at the factory.
But I am seeing a few specific items changed for both Navy and USAF just no hard evidence when and how much. Many of the drawings are unreadable where the actual change notice and it's date are located near the margins.

The Contracts I have studied are grouped here:
M38 Production Contracts
W-20-089-ORD-4758 1950/51
DA-20-018-ORD-9196. 3/1951
DA-20-089-ORD-4601FS 6/1951
DA-33-019-ORD.-43 10/1951
DA-33-019-ORD-494 4/1952
DA-33-019-ORD-630 5/1952

Wes,

That other bumperette markings blue print (800861) lists US Air Force "Chrome Yellow" WO Spec J-205 and USA spec 3-1
As part of contract number DA-33-019-ORD-43

HOWEVER it does not list anything about Strata Blue or any other blue - only the bumperette markings for USAF were in "Chrome Yellow".

NOW was that part of the contract actually filled and as to what color the jeep was painted I don't know.

Kendall, does your data plate have that contract? If so what is the hood number again?

BTW: the USN blue print stated bumperette markings paint as WO spec J-302.

I plan on doing an update to the M38 book with more information - hopefully we can further document some of this evidence.

The contract number for this M38 is DA 33-019-ORD-43 with DoD of 3/52. Here is a photo of the hood with the original(?) Air Force numbers. It appears to be N-1764 in two inch numbers and letter, but there seems to be a smaller 1 1/2" yellow "3" also visible.

Thanks for all your help.

And Ryan, wouldn't it be odd to paint "chrome yellow" over olive drab?

Kendall,

I typed in the wrong contract number but I just corrected it on my posting to avoid confusion. I am looking at too many blue prints today.

Your contract data plate number is the same and your hood number listed is in the range listed on the blue print for USAF jeeps in that contract.

The data for USAF M38 Jeeps was added to this blue print on 8-29-1951. Your jeep was accepted in 1952

I think it is safe to say you have a factory USAF Jeep - NOW the question is was it OD2430 or Strata Blue when it left the factory.

I agree that it would be odd to not be Strata Blue, but I have no factory documentation at this time.

Sorry guys - I've been out of this for a while. I obviously meant Air Force Jeeps with Strata Blue.

The poor resolution documents are because they are .tif files scanned from 16mm microfilm of the records. They were .tif files and could not be posted directly, so I just took a photo of the computer display.

It also looks like you both only received 2/3 of the files I sent so I can see your difficulty. The MC and MD Bill of materials (BOM) is not like MB and previous where it is only one book with all components. It is more of an index of the parts by category. So the PAINT category is a few dozen pages. There are 3 BOMS for MC paint, and I thought I only sent you the Air Force version.

If time permits, I'll try to print and rescan the Paint BOMS in a compatible file type, and upload more of the raw files.

Kieth,

That is great! Wes and I did not receive any of the BOM stuff, only the tool list for assembly on the M38A1.
