Found a mechanical gauge that came with the correct bushing and it installed easily. Unfortunately, it began to leak around the wire the first time I fired it up. I had put thread tape on the nut so I think maybe it didn't seat all the way. I cleaned that up and re-installed it but haven't had a chance to test it again because....
my thermostat and housing were a nightmare. I bought a new thermostat going on the assumption that coolant was not flowing to the radiator (it was overheating at idle). Turns out that was correct. I pulled the housing apart and it was full of green jelly. Absolutely plugged, couldn't see through it at all. Best I can tell is the old thermostat froze up and coolant, minerals and rust collected in there and formed a sort of mortar. In the mean time, it rusted a hole in the housing (and the upper radiator hose leaks). Argh. New housing, thermostat, gasket and upper radiator hose on the way. I was hoping to take her for a spin this weekend, looks like that's not going to happen. Should hopefully get her on the road early next week.
