In Ryan Miller's book "M38 Reference Guide" the photos on page 25, 27, 42, 142 show 2 t-handles and a knob. And in the Controls section on page 125 it shows the a closeup of the differences between M38 and M38A1 throttle t-handle knobs and a diagram with 2 t-handles and a round choke knob. I suspect that the drawn parts diagrams showing round knobs for throttle and fording are that way because the artist just didn't put in that small detail. The t-handles in every photo are aligned left-right so in drawing them from the side - they would look like round knobs unless you put in the tiniest detail showing the T in side view. I think the photos are more correct that drawn parts diagrams.

I do not believe that Fig. 5 Instruments and Controls TM9
804 above is a drawing and without a doubt shows a round
throttle knob.

I could agree with that assessment. So You are saying this drawing's artwork is suspect:

And you then said:
I think the photos are more correct that drawn parts diagrams.
So these frontal photos in the TM's are accurate?

But In Ryan's M38 Guide there are a total of 7 photos of the dash and 4 have round knobs and 3 have "T" knobs.

His photo on page 125 has no origins in any of the M38 TM's or ORD 9's yet it has the same artwork appearance of those ORD 9 photos. I will guess it is a photo/artwork from one of the 7 pilot M38's and probably # 7 pilot since that's the only pilot that has a dash photo showing a "T" handle throttle.

None of this photo artwork has 100% reliability since it has all been doctored a bit. I have only seen one photo that offers any solid evidence to the "T" type throttle control.

Hi Wes,
Yes that is the 238 series delivery photo that I was referencing
as having a t handle.

Was there a change between the 236's and 238's?

Your part numbers do not indicate.

Fun running this stuff down

Again, motor pool you can do either it seems.

The 236 hood numbers include about the first 4000 M38's built Sep 1950 thru Jan/Feb 1951 under contract W-20-089-ORD-4758. The 238 hood numbers encompass Jan/Feb 51 thru about Mar/Apr 51 which would be the 2nd batch of about 6600 M38's under contract DA-20-018-ORD-9196. May 51 was the switch from the 7 digit hood numbers to the 8 digit hood numbers.

Wes,

801683 has always been a T handle.

I'll try to post the profile dimensions.

Thanks Keith. The only document I could locate with dimensions was the 1963 doc. Can you email me the early 50's drawing?

It's big, and faded, but I'll try.
