That’s the magic of what happens when we post at the same time :D .

... and then someone goes back and does an edit. (me) :D

At least now I know I'm not completely losing my mind.

Well, like the rest of us you are restoring a war jeep.
So, there may be a problem somewhere. :D

We 70 year old guys go to bed early. Later.

You have a point there, fixing any old vehicle in ill repair will make you half crazy or completely insane especially with limited knowledge on 60 or year old tech that's in limited supply.

I'm no where near 70 but some days I sure feel that way considering how the world is changing, born in the 2000s but feel like I was born in the 40s or 50s.

Having been Infantry myself, all the rucking in SF, I've "dozed" on long ruck marches..... Broken foot and all.

Still, would rather ride! :-)

A long while back I worked on the fuel tank, even have pics of what I think was the uptake and sending units that were attached to the tank. Maybe not.

Today I was refurbishing stuff and, well, something ain't right.
Maybe I have a M38A1 uptake unit .... but I sure thought it fit the tank... until it didn't.
Best path forward ?? I can trim that puppy to fit. or... I can spend money. ????

Hi Don,
Are you saying that everything fit when you took it apart --- but now it doesn't?
Same gas tank, same fuel pick-up assembly?

The only thing you bought and changed since you took it apart was a new filter on the end of the pick-up tube?

Here's your earlier post photo: http://willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php? ... ank+filter

It's hard to see your tape measure.....how far is it off from fitting?

What changed?

If I isn't correct you should be able to order one from Kaiser Willys and also cross reference years and models that will fit.

My Bubba senses say cut the thing down and save 200 bucks for something else.
But you have to ask yourself a set of question ,will this mess up something or will this be a never ending nightmare?

KW is the last place I look for anything M38.
Crazy-expensive pricing of parts that are advertised as M38 parts but aren't.
If you get past the many errors on almost every page, they do have a slick catalog --- maybe better for the CJ's I don't know.

I prefer to stick with the well-known venerable military jeep vendors that have a great reputation for accurate parts and much more reasonable prices.

But that's just me.

I imagine Don might want to research the problem before throwing money at more parts or cutting things. :D

That is a fair point on both accounts.

The tank is about 7” deep. The pick up is about 1/2” longer.

It’s been two years. Maybe the pick up was already off the tank when I took the pics. Maybe the pic I have of the pick up still attached to to tank was from another jeep that got mixed in with my build folder.

Anyway. I spent a lot of time buffing up a unit that don’t fit.
If adversity builds character then I will soon be a very fine fellow.

Hey!!
That ‘Greek’ rear wiring harness I bought early in the build fits my two plug light switch and looks to be the correct length for the jeep.... and it’s not rotten.

The trailer plug & wires on the other rotten NOS harness I bought look in ‘not so bad’ shape. I clipped it off and may slap on some shrink wrap to stabilize the wire covering then add connectors and drop it in the rear slot.

then crawl under the jeep and try to find where the clips go... yeah, I got the diagram but a ‘fly by’ set if pics or video that offer a real life view of the wiring harness is what this noob needs. Back to the barn.

Just a silly thought but the top of the tank hasn't gotten bowed down at all has it?
