wondering if they came off the same jeep!!

A memorial to my Bro.. Bob and i co-owned the M-38 until his death
in 2009. It sat untouched for some 25 years in his barn in AZ.
I brought it to Idaho in august 2009 and began resto..
THIS IS FOR YOU, BOB..

thx to Rich Johnson for the inspiration (quote)
and special thx to Jeff Devey @ Jeff's Graphics
in Twin Falls for the artwork.

What a great weekend!! Beautiful sunny sky and no wind!!
It was hard to decide what to do, saddle my mule or work on
the jeep. A compromise was made-jeep saturday and mule
sunday. I got my rebuilt (Then & Now) AC fuel pump installed
and bent/flared/installed the fuel lines.
WARNING: rant follows... I made the mistake of purchasing
china's finest harbor freight double flare tool-what a piece of
crap!! The clamp bar is so poorly made that no matter how
tight you clamp it-the tube slides out of position as you apply
the flare. A lot of cussing and well bend but badly flared tubes
later i called my buddy who runs the small town auto parts store
here-he offered to let me use his 25yr old double flare kit-
good ol' American tool steel- perfect double flares 1st time
every time! thanks Dennis!!

Boy, can I identify with that struggle of what to do with my weekends - I have so many hobbies and projects, I often feel like I'm sacrificing one thing to do another. And then I only get half as much done as I think I'm going to! But it's all fun.

I went through a couple of trials of double flaring tools before finding one that worked. I tried a Lisle #31310, a brand that you find at better auto part stores, and it did a poor job of gripping the tubing. It's been a while, so I don't remember exactly what the problem was, but I think the two clamp bars didn't align properly. I think I tried some other brand that also didn't work well. I ended up with an OTC 4503 that worked better and actually cost less than the Lisle. I even considered getting a Snap-On Blue Point at 2X the price, but the OTC worked fine. I've since bought a number of OTC pullers and bearing separators and am happy with their quality. I got them from www.tooltopia.com - good website, good prices, and good service. They carry the hub puller Jeepers need for the rear axle (http://www.tooltopia.com/otc-tools-7394.aspx, but I got lucky last weekend and scored a used one for half price at The Big (and it's BIG) 3 Parts Exchange in San Diego. You can also find a lot of OTC tools on Amazon.

IT LIVES!!!!

connected the batteries. This mornin i did a few simple checks- 24v to the
dist and so on. What the heck all looks ok i'll prime the carb and give it
a crank. STARTED ON THE 2ND REVOLUTION AND PURRED LIKE A
KITTEN!! SCARED THE CRAP OUTTA ME CUZ I WASNT EXPECTING IT!!
+- 30 yrs after my bro and i got it and 2-1/2 years into resto i finally
heard that sweet JEEP 4 banger sound-ah the smell of exhaust fumes
in the mornin!! Life Is Good!! WHO-HOO!!

Great news Rick, you've done us all proud! That Go-Devil engine was aptly named, if you ask me.

Take a trip with the windshield down and let the hair fly back (the few bits you haven't torn out  ).

Enjoy.....
Owen.

Spent several hours this weekend troubleshooting the gages
with the help of Bob Westermans guide (found in downloads).
Follow this guide and you're in business-i know i am.
Had a full set of AC gages but as luck would have it the
AC water temp gage is DOA so i've got 1 SW gage in the panel
but all works. GREAT!!.

Rick,
Looking great.

Not sure if you and I compared notes already. Your s/n 51986 was one of the 102 jeep production that had the first closed or second-style venting system.
S/N 51887 was the beginning, 51989 ended it. The engine serial for 51887 is listed as MC74419.

It wasn't until #53262 that production again included the second-style venting. I dont have any documentation why they ran the 102 jeeps but there have been opinions that it was a pilot run on the assembly line.

Questions for you:
Do you have the original MC engine s/n 74xxx?
Was the 1/52 delivery date stamped on your plates?
Did you indeeed find evidence of the second style venting? (closed bellhousing, different venting routing etc?)
Did you find any evidence on the dash of the fording decal telling of the plug for the bellhousing?
If yes - where was the decal?

Tom

Hi Tom, this is Rick, Bob is interned @ the veterans cemetery in Cave Creek Az. No worries-honest mistake.. :)
To answer your questions:
1. The engine S/N is MC74754 with a recond tag near the starter
dated 02-58 at P.O.D. (phx, pomona??)
2. Yes the 1/52 dod is stamped on the plate (not repop plates),
the S/N @ dashplate & wheelhouse plate match MC51986.
3. Yes it has the late style bellhousing #804812. The vent routing
was missing by the time i brought it home in 2009.
4. No fording decal telling of the plug but the brass dash plate
@ the double fording cable was in place.

If i can help w/more info just ask.. Rick

Rick,
My respects to Bob! Your windshield artworks says it all.

Thanks for the info.
I'll let you know if anyone ever shares factory paperwork regarding these 102 early jeeps.
Tom
