Rear brake drum and spindle nut

I am working on a 1948 willys jeep, at this time just trying to make it a roller. Trying to mount the brake drums I don't have the key but do have the spindle nut, but the nut only tightens so far and I still have approximately 1/8 inch (maybe a little more) play. What am I missing?
I have never worked on this type of vehicle. Thanks

You are missing the key. The key does not slip toatally in the slot. It is slightly larger and will take up the short space the nut has left without the key.
