Is there suppose to be a piece of welt that goes between the side step an the fender? There is only one bolt that would hold it in place.

The SNL says yes, I used a piece of military belt...

Is it the width of the step?

I used standard military belt material... the type used to hold the pants up... It comes in Blue, green, khaki, black and white... It is about 1 1/4" wide and made of cotton like welt material comes in 48" lengths. I cut two pieces one to follow the fender down and one to follow the step across. I used a grommet hole punch to make holes for the bolts... I also used the same material for the welt under the fuel tank strap...

Thanks Hal. I have some welting material. I wasnt' sure about how much to cut for that step area since it only has one bolt hole.

I know this isn't correct, but after other work I'd done using webbing (welt) I switched to modern tent fabic cut to shape. I did the same thing on my M35 wings.

My reason for this is, the modern fabic does not absorb and hold water the way the old welt does and when it does get wet it very quickly wicks the moisture out of the metal to metal area.

If you can find this type of material (last years dead tent) it often has sown in piping along a doubled over seam at the edges, this is the best place to cut off a strip as the piping gives a nice edge between the two exposed edges of metal ( looks just like welt!) and the cut edge gets hidden inside the two metal edges.

I'll try a get a photo of where I did this on my M35 as on the M38 you can't see it, its too well hidden. Its our local show today so I'm just a little busy but at least I'll have a digital camera with me!,

Oh and, correct or not I ran it along the step / wing join and then up the wing / body, cutting a slit to slide it in past the body/wing bolts join to stop the metal to metal rubbing. Again, that probably isn't right .

No welt - would hold water and "rust".
