M38a1 Fuel Tank Sending Unit

Post by Saberr »

Will the m151 unit work on a m38a1 tank ? Pulled mine, and it looks the same, but can not find any confirmation.

Electrically they should interchange, but the actuator arm and
float, and swing would be different unless the tanks are
identical, read the level readout will not be correct. That and
depending on the depth of the tank the sender may not fit
mechanically or the float/arm may contact the tank somewhere.

The A1 senders are plentiful. Why not just use the right one?

The reason i ask, is because it says it works on an m38a1. Also its originally for a MUTT, and i know some mutt is interchangeable with lat m38a1, espec in the electronics. Mutt parts are ALOT cheaper. That unit is about half the price of an a1 sending unit. I also read the mutt sending unit is compatible with m38, and have read that m38 units are usable with m38a1 tanks. Also its a lot harder to find an A1 unit in comparison. Only place that stock them that i saw is oskosh, and even ebay is expensive. Also the one i pulled from my tank looks exactly like that mutt unit, not the standard one, and mine is straight from the service.

I used a M151 fuel tank sender in my M38 - I had to shorten the arm attached to the float and the metal "blade" that connects the mounting head to the float pivot. The mounting holes matched perfectly. When the modifications were complete the size matched the original M38 sender. It works well. The only other change needed was to put the Parker connector on the electrical wire to match the sender. A M38A1 sender has different dimensions but I believe with simple changes a MUTT sender could work there as well. The M151 sender will not pass muster if the Jeep is in any kind of competition show but it is military, it will work and it can be cheaper to buy.
