Always something to learn from reading the ORD 9 SNL G740. I was working with the battery frame J- bolts and discovered that there were 2 styles of wing nuts (I think one style may have had a hole for a wire tie) however more importantly: on the M38 no washers were used under the wing nuts. The M38A1 used a flat washer and a lock washer under each wing nut. And in TM9-804 and TM9-8012 it looks like there are no washers. i bet most restorers have added washers! .... Brian

below is the removal and install sections of the M38 battery "A" under the hood form section 155 in the TM9-8012 of 1956. Washers are mentioned under the frame wing nuts. There is no mention of washers under the battery "B" (cowl) section at all.

I am in no way suggesting which way is correct.

(4) Remove the two wing nuts and flat washers securing
the hold-down frame to the battery, and the wing nuts and flat washers securing the battery box-to-fender straps to the battery box and hold-down frame. Remove the box-to-fender strap bolts and remove the hold-down frame.

2) Install the hold-down frame and install the two two 3/l6 x 3/4 bolts through the hold-down frame, the battery box, and the battery box-to-fender strap. Secure the hold- down frame and box-to-fender straps with four 5/16-inch plain washers and 5/16-inch wing nuts.

Very observant: I'll spend more time reading TM9-804 and 8012 as well as the body and power train manual and engine and clutch manual.
