Dana 18 transfer case bearing removal

I'm in the garage today and while I wait for rebuild kit to arrive for the T90, I went forward and started disassembling the transfer case. I can't seem to get the main shaft bearing off. Any ssuggestions on what to stick in between gear and bearing to push bearing off? There is a specialty tool listed in the book but I obviously don't have that.
And somewhere in there is suppose to be a thrust washer and a snap ring. Maybe I will see the snap ring when I get the bearing off the shaft.
I tried a chisel that has a tapered end and a big flat screwdriver but no luck yet.

Mosers Ludel shows using a tie rod end pickle if you don't have the wedge spreader.

Thanks Brian. My pickle fork is not wide enough but that managed to get the bearing down the shaft just enough that I could use my crappy snap ring pliers to pry out the snap ring from the groove. Then I could tap the shaft until bearing came loose.
Thanks again. Now I can wash transfer case and transmission and hopefully get my rebuild parts soon. My intermediate shaft needs replacing. I've now read this is a common issue. Needle bearings pressed into shaft.

Will replace needle bearings as well.
Any idea how to determine if thrust washers are usable or worn?

No expert at all, but I've got Moses' Jeep CJ Rebuilders Guide.

That's where I saw the pickle fork trick. I'll check for info
on the thrust washers....

He recommends replacement of all bearings, thrust washers,
rollers, seals and gaskets.

More money, but heck, you are already
elbow deep in the case. Might be (hopefully)
some time before you go back in.

Have you been on Novak's web site? There is a ton of info on transmissions and transfercases. I used their master rebuild kits for both and was very impressed with the quality. It's a lot of time and money up front but you won't regret it. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I will look at the Novak site and do some more research.

I planned on replacing all bearings and I have all new gaskets and seals already. Guess I will see what the kits come with.

Use the Rick Stivers transfer rebuild guide. Same guy that published the T90 guide on Willys Tech. You must still follow your rebuild along with the military manual no matter which guide you use. There are subtle differences between military and civilian boxes.
