Holes in top of guard (grille)

The attached photo in Ron's post reminded me of something
I've been puzzling over for some time.
On top of the radiator guard (grille) there are two raised
ears, one on each side. There are two holes drilled in the
top of each.
What was/is the purpose of the raised ears and holes?
I have not seen anything where those two sets of holes
are used, but just may be overlooking something obvious.
Thanks,

Huh.
It says one end of the rod lays down on the lip below the hood hinge when stowed.
Wouldn't that thing rattle like an old Econolone van?
Also, still puzzling about the four holes in the tops of the to radiator supports.

My apologies! Got my post mixed up. I'll try to fix it.
My truck has welting riveted to the top of those two posts. The same as goes across the top of the grill to weather seal the hood when down. Called LINER, WO-663520 in the ORD9, Figure 05-1 page 92. But I think mine in those two places isn't correct, something the previous owner must have done with some leftover after he installed it where the TM says it belongs. No indication that I can see in the TM that it belongs on top of those two posts. Something to add to my list to fix.
Sorry for the confusion!

There's photos of a very nicely restored M38 on the G503 site that also has welting riveted to those two top posts.
