For gas cap gasket, should I use cork material or something better. Any suggestions appreciated.

If you check either parts manual M38 or M38A1 they both call for rubber. You should always post which model jeep you are inquiring about. Midwest Military has good NOS gaskets that do not soften up when you install it like the repro ones do.
