In the middle of tearing my engine apart, and need to get it cleaned. Believe rust in the oil passages and tons of dirt/rust in the water jacket. I know hot dip is best, but i'm in CA, and because of EPA, a hot bath filled w/tide detergent will do more than machine shops can offer. Should i shake and bake it ? hear that won't get all the rust in the jacket. The other offer is the power wash. It may remove paint and blow gunk out, but won't necessarily remove rust. Was thinking about just running draino through the water jacket and oil passages, followed by white vinegar and a through flush. Whats your guys opinion on the best way and any thoughts on other ways ?

I have used the rust removal by electrolysis method before and it works pretty good. Washing soda, water, and battery charger. Just goggle it to learn more.

AHH, i knew i was missing something in the post. Playing with that all day. letting some go over night right now. Electro seems the way to go, but reality may be diff, not sure how it will get rust out of the deep corners in head/block.

For heavy duty filth collections inside a half century old block nothing will replace hot tanking. If you can't find an engine rebuilding shop that can get it clean in CA. then I would build a crate and start shopping outside the EPA palace.
