Only the Canadian M38's and M38A1's came with an eyebolt plate. The US M38, M38A1 did not come with eyebolt plates or eyebolts for tow chains. The common practice was to hook the chains to the rear crossmember tie down loops. Left to left and right to right.

Actually the Army at first replaced all the short chains with long chains and later they removed all the chains.

Dan, Our time in the military was well past M100 time. Somewhere I have a Bulletin directing their removal from the M100's in the 50's. I also have a few motor pool photos of groups of M100's without any chains. How long that lasted I have no idea.
My years in the Air Force 66-89 all our flightline trucks had pintle hooks but no chain eyes. I never towed an Air Force piece of aviation support equipment that had any safety chains.

I see, but, I did see M100s both in the National Guard in the active Army in the early 1970s. I worked in the motor pool in Europe and we did have a few M100 trailers still, but, I can't remember if they had chains as we didn't use them much. The M100 we had in the National Guard did not leave the motor pool until one day it was loaded up and sent to Cp Ripley, last I saw of it.

I saw a few in the Air Force in thew 60's but I don't recall with or without chins but we never used them on the flightline during my time in. As I said above I have no idea how long or how many posts followed the bulletin to remove the chains.
