L-134 camshaft removal

The block is being prepared for hot dip, boring/honing. Should I not be able to remove the camshaft w/o removing the timing gear? The crankshaft and pistons are out. The valve spring keepers have been taken out. Two valves have been removed with the others frozen in place - majority in the closed position. The camshaft rotates freely, one direction or the other but is restricted from 360 degree turn due to closed valves. The engine front plate is still attached. Thanks in advance. Bill

To my knowledge you need to pull all the valves or a big portion of them... The cam is hanging up on the valves...

Had the opposite problem, with a L161 Engine... The machine shop put all the valves in and did not put the cam in first... Had to take all their work out to get the cam in...

I may be wrong, but better to be safe than sorry... and damage the cam

I think you're right. Won't do any harm trying to drive the valves out "bottom up". But am I correct, the cam can be removed with the front plate installed if the valves are out of the way?

As I recall there is a plate with bolts behind the fibre gear that hold the cam in place, if you rotate the cam and look through the holes in the gear you will see them. The bolts have to come out before the cam can be removed. :)
