Did I buy buy the wrong filter? Should it come all the way up to the top of canister and fit against the wall of canister?
I'm was under the impression that this was the civilian canister, just want to confirm my setup is correct.

You need a NAPA 1010.

The filter itself is supposed to be much smaller than the canister. As you can see, the spring keeps the filter in place when the lid is attached. You are in the right ballpark - which filter element is that? Can't see the entire number clearly. I use a WIX 51010 in my M38A1. Yours may be an equivalent.

Thanks alot for the info. Looks like this one is correct. It is a Purolator L20701 filter that is cross referenced to be the same as the Wix 501010.
now just need to find a gasket as the supplied gasket is too small and not rubber like the one on my lid currently.

What makes you think your filter housing is a civilian housing?

M38A1's up through sn MD21832 used the Cuno style filter made by Cuno.



M38A1's after sn MD28132 used the Military Junior Filter housing made by Fram.





The military junior & senior filters are covered in detail in David Spences 1980's vintage MVP Magazine articles which are condensed into a Military Parts manual distributed by Portrayal Press.

Many filter elements have several applications which is why the low demand military junior gasket is often not included in modern cross referenced element kits.

I am only "assuming" I have the junior canister due to the size of it, nothing else.
I will look for a filter using your cross reference numbers.... after I read the information you posted.
