I've discovered tags on the differentials of my 1951 M38. Each tag is marked with "W", "43", and "8". The markings are not in line. I've got them soaking in a solution and will take a picture once cleaned. Anyone know what the markings mean?

Most, if not all, gearing on the M38 was 5.38.
43÷8 = 5.375 ( 5.38 )
I believe its 43 teeth on the ring gear and 8 on the pinion side.
The "w" on tag? Cant help

Brad is correct. They are the diff ratio tags.

Might be "M" rather than "W". Matter of perspective.

Both look like yours. I removed them as the differentials are headed for the blaster and didn't want them blasted away.
