Any opinions on whether the 25A 24V Delco "breadbox" voltage regulators as used in the G742 Reo and G749 GMC are interchangeable with the Autolite version that is used on the M38 and M38A1?.

What numbers are listed in the G742 and G749's and are these numbers
listed in the G740 and M38A1 manuals?
As I understand it the military parts are not identified principally by maker but by the military ID number, meaning if both Autolite and Prestolite units are id'd by the same number they are interchangeable and the military didn't care which one was installed.
If a motor pool guy replacing a regulator had one of each on the shelf and
they both had the same number he'd grab the nearest one.
Sound about right Wes? They are not the same Stock# or ORD#!

No. (Edit 9-21: They are not the same stock # or ORD#.) The motor pool guy would have tried to keep like parts in with like parts. In other words if you have a Delco generator then stay with a Delco regulator.
I don't have a copy of the Canadian parts manuals but something doesn't sound right BCA. The US M38 & M38A1 ORD 9's list both Autolite & Delco Generators but only list the Autolite Regulator however the M38 & M38A1 ord 7 or 8's both offer both the Delco and Autolite regulators and list the mount brackets for the Delco's. So if you are referring to the Delco regulators PN 1118546, 1118606 or 1118656 they can all be used with the 25Amp system M38's and M38A1's/M170's. They are used with Mount brackets 7539614.
Delco regulators
1118546 - 7351952 - 2920-735-1952
1118606 - 7524473 - Not listed

Sorry Wes, I have to disagree. I spent a lot of time in a many motor pools. Over 30 years. It didn't matter one iota what brand a part was as long it was a suitable part. GIs and the military could care less what brand the part was.

I ask this question because Autolite regulators are scarce but there are
Delco regulators that can be taken off old GMC G749 M211's and old Reo M35 G742's. I know in perfect world that you'd like to use matching brands. I suspect that they are technically interchangeable. I will do some more digging in the G740 and G758 parts books and see what I can come up with.

BCA they are interchangeable keeping in mind that the Delco needs it's own mounting legs (bracket) as I listed above. As I said above they are listed in the ORD 7 & 8's and they can be mix and matched but I do not prefer to do that.

Dan S you are disagreeing with the wrong guy. I also spent my 22 years as a military mechanic and yes as long as the stock number or ORD # was the same we used them with no regard to brand or color.
In this discussion the Stock Numbers and ORD #'s are not the same. With electrical components my personal preference is not to mis match
