I removed the single shim on the top pivot, and its much better, butstill not 20 lbs to move back and forth. Wiper seals are prettymuch shot out, at least on the passenger side. does anyone stock nos wiper seals? I bought replacements some time back, but they are not nearly what the original ones are. Is there any hope of finding nos?~ Swampy~

Midwest Military has the original NOS wiper seals. Know that they are not easy to put on. I don't know if they are any better than the later seals. I do think they are appreciably more expensive.

If you have removed all the shims, you can also install a circular machine bushing between the bearing and cap to achieve the correct pre-load. A well-stocked hardware store will have a supply of various thicknesses. Look for them in the section of the store with all the specialty fasteners in little drawers. As far as the ball seals go, I didn't find them difficult to install at all. We are talking about the ones with the rubber strips backed by spring steel. Just compress the rubber strips back into the housings as you tighten the bolts. There are other types of ball seals, other early Jeeps used felt seals but those don't seal as well in my opinion. They don't add much countering drag to prevent wobble either.

Don't use the NOS seals, go with the later style. If you have no shims under the king pin caps, you need to replace all bearing cups and cones.
