Depends on the electrical loads applied to the generator and the tension on the belt. Running a single belt will usually result in a shorter belt life span. When belts are replaced you should replace them in pairs using two new belts that should have been manufactured approximately at the same time. This is to ensure equal tensions when they are installed.

They originally had two belts but of course it will run with one belt; albeit with a shorter belt life. M37s have only one belt, and they work fine (slightly larger belt though). I assume you aren't powering a radio, which is what the two belts are really for.
