Hi Guys,

The ORD shows the fuel tank strainer as a small little cone shaped thing, but I thought the M38A1 used an insert similar to the M37......a long galvanized tube with the screen soldered into it. I know I've seen folks selling such tubes at meets and they were marked M38A1, as I was looking for an M37 insert and told the two would not interchange. So was there a change made in production at some point that went from the small cone shaped screen to the long tube insert?

ORD# 8329781, WO# 807205 is the only screen strainer listed for the A1. My M38 tank uses the long tubular screen strainer but it is no where near the length of the M37 screen strainer which I have parked in my driveway.

ORD 8329781 is the strainer I'm referring to. In Fig 03-9, where it shows this strainer it appears as just a cone strainer. You mentioned your tank uses a long tubular strainer (like the M37's but not as long). Why doesn't the ORD show/list such a tubular strainer?

Do not rely on the parts illustrations in the Army manuals to accurately describe an item all the time. It happens quite often. For example the manual will show an early prototype component instead of the production component.

When I said mine I was referring to my M38. I currently do not own an M38A1 or M170.
