I see on Bob W's page the Dana 41 was replaced by the 43 in October 1950 on the CJ3A.
I was finally completing Wes' survey and figured out I have a 41 on the rear of my M38.
41

Casting number 18423.
Is that compatible with the W43

Geez. Bubba strikes again.

In searching for axle info here I ran across this:
"Posted: Fri Feb 15, 2013 7:53 pm Post subject: Reply with quote
If you have the correct M38 model 41 or 44 rear axle the odds are the ratio is 5.38:1. If you truly have a GPW or MB front axle then you have two problems. 1-the ration is 4.88:1 and 2-The steering bellcrank is on the axle housing instead of the crossmember. "
Did the M38 come with a 41 at some point? before the 44?
And again, my concern is with the 43/8 on the front. Are they different ratios?
Tks,

an easy way to get a rough idea of gear ratio is to jack up the axle, put tranny in neutral and block wheels of other axle, make a mark on the driveshaft and one on the wheel and count the revolutions needed by the shaft to turn the wheel one revolution.
43/8 is the number of teeth on the ring gear and pinion gear.
divide a ring gear with 43 teeth by a pinion gear with 8 teeth we find that the gear ratio is 5:38.
41 cj 3a axles were 5:38.

Thanks Gary. At least they should work together.

Dana 41 was replaced by the 43
Not. Model 44 replaced the model 41.
Brian, I hope this means you finally figured out the 43/8 (Pinion to ring gear count) has nothing to do with model numbers like 41 and 44

Yes Wes,
44 on Bob's write up. Fat thumbs!
And yes I understand the model numbers are different than ratios.
But what of that post about M38 41's and 44's? I'm trying to make sense
if it. The M38 only came with the 44, right?
I see on your survey you asked about the axles, which made me go out and look.
Tks,
Brian

Yes the M38's came with 25's front and 44's rear.
Not sure which post you are referring to. You quoted a sentence but did not list the link.

M38 prototypes used the MB/GPW rear axle but thats another story. I have not heard of any other axle being used on production M38's other than the dana 44.

Yes they did. The Spicer 23-2 with 4.88:1 gears, combat wheels and 7.00-16 tires.

I'm sure I must be reading sonething out of context.
I need to go back and look at my photos when I redid the brakes

I See now Brian,
Had you just linked the post and used the Quotation marks with that sentence this discussion would have been over two days ago!
If you have the correct M38 model 41 or 44 rear axle the odds are the ratio is 5.38:1
What did I mean by this comment??????
I meant if you have the correct M38 rear axle whichever 4_ unit it is. At that moment 4 years ago I was trying to get a point across quickly and did not want to interrupt my train of thought by spending a half hour researching which or both were original to the M38 since the primary point of that discussion was the FRONT axle (THE model 25).
