I am wanting to put the bumper markings on my M38A1 that would match one of my Dads units. The info that I am wanting to use is the Texas Army National Guard Hq Co 3rd Bn 143 Inf Regt. I'm hoping that some of you can help me get the markings right. Thanks for any help. Mike McMahan

The manual for sorting the markings out is the one that falls in the year group of the time you want your jeep to represent.

AR-850-5 Dated 15 FEB 45 thru Chg 6 dated 18 JAN 49.

TB 746-93-1 Oct 64

TB 43-0209 OCT 76

TM 43-139 1 AUG 86

Keep in mind that these were guidelines and they were often supplement by the individual commands.

I always recommend folks visit with the unit historian for the unit's markings they wish to use and review as many period photos of vehicles as they can find.

Reading such markings from left to right on a front bumper to include:

1. The Major Command it is assigned to
2. The Intermediate Command it is assigned to
3. The Unit or Activity it is assigned to
4. The vehicle number for convoy purposes, aka: Order of March

National Guard units sometimes did things different than the regular Army, but in general your dads would look like;

TX-ANG 143-3 (STAR) HQ-(vehicle number)
