This is where someone always says look in the manual. Well if you did then this illustration wasn't much help, was it?

But this ones shows the long bolt in the front.

Makes sense since the front bolt must clear the engine mount plate.

Ahh the title says M38A1 so here we go:

Image
For the A1 long goes forward but

for the early A1 thru engine sn 49065:

The center bolt was used up front thru engine sn 49065. The short extended hex bolt was used forward after that sn.

Take a look at pages 154 & 155 of TM 9-8014, which covers fuel pump removal & installation & includes a good picture on page 155.

Also refer to the picture on page 127 (Fig. 55) relating to the engine removal procedures.

I've found a lot of information buried in the removal, dissassembly,
assembly and installation texts.

Not always so in the Ord 9 lists, nor even clear in illustrations.

If one has the priming lever installed it would seem
pretty clear where the short bolt goes.

How often one finds one intact might be a question.

I have the priming lever and two long bolts. Tight fit, but no interference.

But you have a priming lever on an M38 install,
which makes you a special, out of the box,
cool guy!

Hope to join your club soon!

Thanks Brian! 8) Shiners acceptable for dues anytime!

Apologies! Off topic for the original M38A1 question. Sorry to muddy the water!

Technically correct for a M38 Motor Pool restoration (me thinks anyway).

It's what Supply (a.k.a. MWM) issued when exchanging the old pump carcass. Gave one without a priming lever and got one back that did.

What's a rookie to do? 8O

As Wes has said, it does help priming the pump
but the dash pump really is a big help in cold
weather.

I was planning on buying one each of the bolts
when I install mine but maybe it makes sense
the motor pool guys would have used what they had.

Does the original poster have a priming handle?

Ot, the little town is three hours from home. We can
meet there and drink the holy water from the well!

Midwest Military has the long and the correct short bolt in stock.
Short bolt is for the late pump with the hand prime.
