Jerry Can Holder ID

Hi Guys,

I know where to find the part number stamped into the correct jerry can holders for WWII vintage and for my M37...........but how do you ID the correct holder for the M38A1? The ORD lists a different number than what my M37 calls for and I haven't seen that number stamped into any holders that I've run across. I checked Wes' albums (body and fuel system) for both M38 and M38A1 and didn't find any info. Just looking to find out how I can tell I've found the correct holder when I run across it.

Bob,

I just google the part number and search for a FSN reference. When I find one I google the FSN and you get several very thorough and informative reports listing all the alternate numbers.

Here is the result of googling the ORD 9 SNL G-758 part number 673457 which took me to the FSN 2590-473-6331 which in turn took me to NSN 2590-00-473-6331:

A quick and dirty way to eliminate a wrong holder if its within reach is to make a template of the four bolt holes on the rear of your A1.

Several will fit, but there are plenty that will not line up.

I had one in the bed of my M38 when I bought it, no tailgate. I found a used tailgate, and what do you know, it wouldn't bolt on.

Found guy near here that sells surplus, and he had several for 15 bucks.
I tossed the tailgate in the truck and drove over and tried one. Dead on.

If you are surfing the Interweb Wes' info will be what you need. Or call one of the reputable suppliers. They'll have the right one.

I believe Bob is asking for more than the correct bolt spacing. He wants the correct part number carrier. The WWII pickers are even tougher insisting on a date correct part number gas can carrier with 3 numbers to choose from.

The WO # 673457 is not found on any of the carriers. The ORD# 7375163 is not either. These are the two numbers shown in both the M38 & the M38A1 ORD 9's.

The M38A1 -34P lists the FSN 2590-473-6331. This stock number opens the door to many part numbered carriers.

This one would be correct for a motor pool M38A1

Yes I agree. Your information can be used to buy one from vendors using
the numbers supplied.

I posted my info for those that may find one in a shop or warehouse
and it doesn't have a number or they don't have the jeep on hand to fit.

The same type of template can be used to weed out the knock off spare
carriers who's holes don't line up.

Yah, the G503 guys are pretty anal..

Thanks for the info. So if I'm reading this right there is no way to identify the specific can holder listed in the ORD as WO-673457 (7375163), as this part was not stamped with the part number. Also, at a national level judging event, I wouldn't lose any points for having the wrong can holder if my holder was unmarked, the correct thickness, and fit properly. Seems a bit weird the correct can holder has it's own part number, but is identical to a number of other holder alternate parts.

I just restored a WWII holder (pn 42-B-22590) and will install that while I restore the holder that came on my A1.......will be interesting to see what I have after I blast it.

Not unusual at all. It was common for both the Army Ordinance Stock Number as well as the FSN/NSN to represent more than one manufacturer and more than one part number.

The only way to determine exactly which manufacturer's gas can carrier was installed at Willys is to see the the factory production BOM that included Willys PN 673457. Then you will have to prove exactly what 673457 looked like dimensionally and if it had any identifying marks on it. Not easy to do without a certified factory original unmolested M38 to examine.

Thanks Wes. Understand about the FSN and NSN, what I found interesting was that the same part would have different ORD part numbers. The FSN/NSN list both the 42-B and the M37 ORD part number as alternates, but they're functionally equivalent. I could see the ORD having more than one manufacturer's part number, but not different ORD numbers for the same part. There has to be something different among each of the alternates if they have different ORD part numbers. Does that make any sense?

For example, if Ford and Willys both made the same bracket it would have different manufacturer's part numbers but not different ORD numbers. Here with the can holders you have different manufacturers numbers AND different ORD numbers. So they can't be identical, just functionally the same. Form, fit, function as we say in DoD. So I find it a bit odd the anal MV restorers haven't found out exactly what makes a holder a 673457 and not one of the other unmarked holders. I guess when they do the price of them will skyrocket!!!

That makes my job easier......I just need to find an unmarked holder that fits! I did a little scraping and the holder that came on my jeep is a 42-B.....WWII holder.

You are overlooking a few things. Physical traits of an object are not the only thing that can cause a variation in ORD STK #'s. It can be caused by different contracts for the purchase and special treatment of certain manufacturers or suppliers. Don't trap yourself in a "There's gotta be a physical difference" mindset.

The reason the WWII folks have so much more documentary evidence then the postwar jeeps is more documents hung around longer from 1945 thru 1948. When the big upset came creating the DOD and the Air Force a ton of documentation rules changed.

For example copies of procurement contracts were trash canned at 6 mos.
